The Land Affair - Sherbrooke
Bess Cluney... I have heard this story many times when I lived in Sherbrooke but for the life I cannot remember her fathers name. Her father owned a large piece of land.. he could not read or write but Bess could a wee bit. Every day she went to Sherbrooke to do house work. One day, while she was at work some Jordan came by with a deed and bill of sale that he made himsely and a hand full of change and it looked like a lot money to the father so he put his x on the paper. Bess was very angry when she came home. She took the paper and money to Jordan but he just laughed at her so she said the land would not do him any good and when she died she would come back and haunt the land. For years on a moonlight night one would see Bess dancing on the land and they would hear her sighing. Sidney Clooney's wife Leta used to do house work in Sherbrooke and one night on her way home she sat down to rest...and Bess appeared dancing and sighing Leta told me at first she was scared but she said I was not a Jordan and Bess would not hurt me and she walked into the woods where Bess was . She found an old ash tree that had been struck by lightening and it shone in the moonlight and as the wind blew it sighed.Well Leta went home and told uncle Sid who made her promise never to tell as it was fun to see how scared the Jordans were over the threat and Bess dancing in the moonlight.
